Dal Khalsa has said that the Akal Takht Jathedar should not be under any political or administrative control. They gave this statement after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) asked for suggestions on the rules for the Jathedars, who are the heads of Sikh religious seats (Takhts).
At the same time, Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa ‘Dhuma’, head of Damdami Taksal, has called a meeting of various Sikh organizations on April 27 to decide their next steps. He had earlier protested against the removal of three Jathedars.
In a press conference, Dal Khalsa leaders said they have given a detailed plan to SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami. This plan explains how Jathedars should be chosen, their duties, and how they can be removed. The draft was created by Sikh scholars, experts, and community members after years of discussions.
Paramjit Singh Mand, the working president of Dal Khalsa, said that the five Jathedars of the Sikh Takhts are spiritual leaders and should live as role models. But right now, he said, they are being appointed or removed by people who control the SGPC for political reasons.
Dal Khalsa is demanding that this system should change, and the Jathedars should be truly independent and respected leaders of the Sikh community.
