The Municipal Corporation (MC) of Ludhiana has started a major project to manage and dispose of fresh waste at the city’s main dump site on Tajpur Road. On Wednesday, Ludhiana East MLA Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal, Mayor Inderjit Kaur, and MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal visited the site to inspect the progress.
The MC recently launched solid waste management projects worth ₹130 crore to improve the city’s sanitation. The contractor has installed machines and started disposing of the daily fresh waste, which is around 1,100 metric tonnes.
Officials revealed that about 24.62 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste (old waste) had been lying at the site. A project to clear 5 lakh metric tonnes is already underway, and work to bioremediate the remaining 19.62 lakh metric tonnes will start soon.
In addition, bioremediation work at the Jainpur site for 2 lakh metric tonnes has also begun and is progressing rapidly.
Mayor Inderjit Kaur blamed previous governments for not acting on the waste issue, causing problems like garbage piles, foul smells, and fires. She said that once all projects are completed, the city’s main dump site will be cleaned up, and fresh waste will no longer pile up in the future.
