Hong Kong to Stop Shipping Small Parcels to U.S. After Tariff Hike

Hongkong Post will stop sending small parcels to the United States, the government said on Wednesday. This comes after the U.S. announced it will charge high taxes on low-value goods from Hong Kong.

Starting May 2, the U.S. will end the “de minimis” exemption, which currently allows items under $800 to be shipped without paying any tax. A 120% tariff will now be applied to these goods.

In response, the Hong Kong government said it will not collect U.S. tariffs on Washington’s behalf. So, Hongkong Post will stop accepting parcels going to the U.S. that contain goods and are not sent by air. These are usually sent by sea, which takes longer.

Hongkong Post will continue accepting airmail parcels to the U.S. until April 27, but after that, they will also stop.

This move will likely affect online sellers and customers who rely on low-cost international shipping between Hong Kong and the U.S.
