Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new idea for immigration: a “self-deportation” program for people living in the U.S. illegally. In a recent interview with Fox Noticias, Trump said he wants to offer money and a plane ticket to undocumented immigrants who choose to leave the country on their own.
Trump, who is known for his tough stance on immigration, said his current focus is on removing “murderers” and dangerous criminals. But for others, he wants to create a softer approach.
“We’re going to give them a stipend. We’re going to give them some money and a plane ticket,” Trump said. He added that if these people are found to be “good”, the U.S. will work to help them return legally in the future.
Trump was shown a video clip of a Mexican man who has lived in the U.S. for over 20 years and has American-born children. The man said he would have voted for Trump if he could, and agreed that criminals should be deported — including himself, if needed. Trump responded by saying: “This is a guy that we want to keep.”
Trump also said he wants to help farms and hotels that need workers. He mentioned that undocumented workers should leave and return legally, but didn’t explain how that process would work.
“We’re doing a self-deportation and we’re going to make it comfortable for people,” he said, adding that the U.S. will work with them to come back legally.
The interview was recorded on Monday and aired Tuesday, with no clear details yet about when or how the plan would start.
