Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring paid tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar on his birth anniversary on Monday, while strongly defending senior party leader Partap Singh Bajwa over the recent police case filed against him.
Speaking during his visit to the city, Warring said Dr Ambedkar’s legacy continues to guide the struggle for justice and equality. However, his tribute was accompanied by sharp criticism of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
Warring condemned the case filed against Bajwa — who had earlier claimed that 50 bombs had been smuggled into Punjab — calling it a political move meant to silence the Opposition. “The government cannot silence its critics through such pressure tactics,” he said, adding that the Congress party will soon decide its next steps.
He confirmed that police had pasted a notice at Bajwa’s residence summoning him, but Bajwa had informed the police in writing that he couldn’t attend due to prior commitments. Warring questioned why CM Bhagwant Mann was not taking Bajwa’s warning seriously, especially when central agencies had already alerted the Punjab government about possible grenade attacks in the state.
“The government should be working on protecting people, not threatening political opponents,” Warring said. He also accused the Mann government of misusing police power and said the AAP’s actions might backfire with elections approaching in less than two years.
Criticizing the current state of democracy in Punjab, Warring added that the Leader of the Opposition is not even allowed to speak freely in the Assembly. “The whole world has seen the behaviour inside the Vidhan Sabha,” he said, taking a direct jab at the ruling party’s handling of dissent.
