Shinku La Reopened for Tourism, Boosting Connectivity Between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh

In a significant boost to tourism and connectivity in the high-altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, the Shinku La pass on the Darcha–Shinku La–Padum road has been officially reopened for tourists today by the district administration of Lahaul and Spiti. This reopening follows the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) restoring the strategically important route for traffic on April 8, reconnecting the remote Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh with the Zanskar valley in Ladakh.

Rahul Kumar, the Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul and Spiti, confirmed that the tourist route was now open, although under certain conditions due to unpredictable weather in the region. The movement of traffic will be regulated on alternate days. On Thursdays, vehicles will be allowed to travel from Lahaul to Zanskar, while on Fridays, the reverse movement from Zanskar to Lahaul will be permitted. The travel window has been set from 9 am to 1 pm daily.

To ensure safety in the lingering snow-covered conditions, only 4×4 vehicles and those equipped with snow chains will be allowed on the route. The administration has urged travellers to follow the safety protocols laid out by the district authorities.

In addition to the Shinku La route, partial access has also been granted to the Manali–Leh highway. Tourists are now allowed to travel up to Deepak Taal, a scenic spot located beyond Darcha, from 9 am to 2 pm daily, depending on the weather. Meanwhile, restoration work continues on the Baralacha La section of the highway, which remains closed for the time being.

The Manali–Koksar road has also been opened for tourists up to Kutbihal, further enhancing regional connectivity.

With the reopening of these iconic snow-covered destinations, authorities anticipate a surge in tourist footfall in the Lahaul valley, offering ample opportunities for recreational activities and scenic experiences. The region’s abundant snow provides ideal conditions for winter sports and trekking.

DC Rahul Kumar emphasized the importance of adhering to safety norms and weather advisories to avoid any incidents. Tourists have been advised to stay updated with the weather forecasts and guidelines issued by the administration before embarking on their journeys.
