Vinesh Phogat Requests Both Cash Reward and Plot, Leaving Haryana Sports Department in Dilemma

The Haryana Sports Department is in a difficult position after wrestler-turned-MLA Vinesh Phogat, despite being asked to choose between a Rs 4 crore cash reward, a plot, or a Group A job, has requested both the cash and the plot. This request has created confusion among the authorities about how to proceed.

On March 25, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that the state Cabinet had decided to treat Phogat as a special case, allowing her to choose one of three benefits typically awarded to silver medallists. This decision followed her disqualification from the Paris Olympics for exceeding the weight limit.

The Haryana Sports Department had subsequently offered Phogat the choice of a Rs 4 crore cash award, an Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) plot, or a Group A government job. However, Phogat responded by accepting the cash prize and simultaneously requesting the plot, which is typically granted to Olympic silver medallists.

The situation is complicated as Phogat, being an MLA, is unlikely to opt for the government job. A Sports Department official expressed uncertainty, saying, “She was supposed to choose one benefit, but she has asked for both.”

Phogat had advanced to the finals in the 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics but was disqualified just before her bout on August 7, 2024, after weighing over the limit by more than 100 grams. The disqualification came despite her being within the weight limit during the initial weigh-in on August 6.

After her disqualification, CM Saini expressed pride in Phogat’s achievement and announced she would receive benefits similar to a silver medallist. Shortly after, Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling.

In September 2024, she joined the Congress Party and won the Julana Assembly seat by over 6,000 votes. During the recent Budget session, she reminded the CM of his promise, leading to the Cabinet’s decision on March 25 to grant her the benefit as a special case.

Haryana offers some of the highest prize money in the country for Olympic achievements. Gold medallists receive Rs 6 crore, silver medallists receive Rs 4 crore, and bronze medallists receive Rs 2.5 crore. Additionally, all athletes from the state who participate in the Olympics are awarded Rs 15 lakh each.

Despite repeated attempts, Phogat could not be reached for comment.
