Mohali: A painter was brutally murdered, and his body was discarded in a drain in Basant Vihar of Dhakoli, Zirakpur.
The victim has been identified as Mukesh Kumar, who had been residing in Basant Vihar colony for the past 15 years. Mukesh, who had previously worked as an e-rickshaw driver, had been earning his livelihood as a painter for the past three years. His wife, Sheela, is employed as a house cleaner.
The body was first seen by a few people who were out for a morning walk on Monday.They alerted the police.
Police cordoned off the area and took the body in its custody. Forensic experts collected samples from the site.
Blood-stained bricks and a bedpost were found in close proximity to a nearby shop, suggesting that the painter had been attacked before his body was dumped into the drain.
The authorities have launched an investigation into the murder. Inspector Gurmehar Singh, SHO, Dhakoli police said initial findings suggest that Mukesh was beaten to death by unknown assailants on Sunday night, and his body was subsequently disposed of in the drain. The police are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding area in an attempt to identify and apprehend the killers.
A CCTV footage from a camera installed near a shop captured a glimpse of a violent altercation that took place around 12.15am on Sunday night. Although the faces of those involved are not clearly visible, the footage provides a crucial lead for the investigators. The police are also delving into Mukesh’s whereabouts and companions on the night of the murder.
The police have meanwhile booked two to three unidentified assailants on the charges of murder and destruction of evidence at Dhakoli police station.
