At a Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting, Sonia Gandhi strongly opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the One Nation, One Election Bill, calling them attacks on the Constitution and tools to push the BJP’s political agenda.
She described the Waqf Bill as a “brazen assault on the Constitution” and accused the government of trying to keep society divided. The bill gives the government more control over Waqf properties, which are meant for the welfare of the Muslim community. Critics argue this could harm minority rights.
Sonia Gandhi also spoke against the One Nation, One Election Bill, saying it weakens democracy. The bill proposes holding Lok Sabha and state assembly elections together, which the opposition believes will centralize power and reduce the influence of regional parties.
During the meeting, Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, were present. Sonia Gandhi also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of rebranding old initiatives from 2004-2014 as his own and urged Congress members to expose this through public outreach.
She further criticized the BJP for not allowing opposition leaders to speak in Parliament and for spreading false claims about Congress-ruled states. She encouraged Congress MPs to fight back by highlighting failures in BJP-led states.
The Waqf Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha late at night after a 12-hour debate, with 288 votes in favor and 232 against. The Rajya Sabha will discuss the bill on Thursday.
