The White House has raised concerns about the high tariffs imposed by India and several other countries on American goods, particularly agricultural products. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted that India imposes a 100% tariff on US agricultural exports, which, along with other high tariffs globally, makes it nearly impossible for US products to be sold in those markets.
Leavitt pointed out that the European Union charges a 50% tariff on American dairy, Japan imposes a 700% tariff on American rice, and Canada levies nearly 300% on American butter and cheese. She criticized these countries for their trade practices, claiming that they have been unfair to American businesses and workers for decades.
President Donald Trump, who has frequently criticized these high tariffs, plans to introduce reciprocal tariffs on April 2, calling it “Liberation Day” for the US. Leavitt stated that the tariffs, which are set to be a “big game-changer,” will be reciprocal in nature, ensuring fairness for American industries.
While Leavitt did not specify the exact details of the new tariffs or which countries would be affected, she emphasized that the move aims to level the playing field for American products. She also highlighted the strong team of trade advisors supporting Trump’s decision, including key officials from the Commerce Department, Treasury, and Trade Representative’s office.
Trump had previously described the existing tariffs as “temporary” and “small” but emphasized that the upcoming tariffs will be much more significant and will benefit the American people by ensuring reciprocity in trade agreements.
