Punjab Police Replaces SIT Head for the Fifth Time in Drugs Case Against Bikram Singh Majithia

The Punjab Police has once again reshuffled the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the drugs case against former Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia. This marks the fifth time the team has been reconstituted.

The new SIT will now be led by AIG Varun Sharma, replacing DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar as the chairperson. The other members of the new team include SSP Abhimanyu Rana from Tarn Taran and SP Gurbans Singh Bains from Patiala. The decision to form a new SIT was made by the Bureau of Investigation on March 31, 2025.

Majithia was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in December 2021, during the Congress-led government. Since then, the investigation has seen multiple changes in leadership. Initially, the SIT was headed by AIG Balraj Singh, then replaced by IG Rahul S. when the AAP government took over. In May 2023, IGP Mukhvinder Singh Chhina was made the SIT head, followed by DIG Bhullar in January 2024 after Chhina’s retirement.

Despite these frequent changes, the investigation has not made significant progress, and no charges have been filed against Majithia. In March 2025, Majithia was questioned for two days following Supreme Court orders. He has maintained his innocence, stating that the police lack evidence to prove the charges.

The frequent reshuffling of the SIT has drawn criticism for the slow progress in the investigation, leading to public concerns about the handling of the case.
