Indian Student Enrolments in New Zealand and Australia Surge, Expected to Nearly Double by 2030

Indian student enrolments in New Zealand have increased by 48.9% since 2021 and are projected to almost double by 2030, according to a report by University Living, a global student housing platform. The report, titled Beyond Beds and Benches – Decoding ANZ’s Education System, highlights the growing popularity of New Zealand and Australia as top study destinations for international students, especially from India.

The report reveals that student migration to the Oceania region has been on the rise, growing from 2.1 million in 2015 to 2.3 million in 2024. Indian student enrolments in Australia also increased by 9.2% between 2021 and 2024. The economic impact of international education in both countries is significant, contributing approximately NZD 4.4 billion to New Zealand’s economy and AUD 47.8 billion to Australia’s economy in the 2023–2024 period.

Saurabh Arora, Founder and CEO of University Living, attributed this rise in enrolments to policy reforms that make the study-abroad journey easier and improve post-study career opportunities. He pointed out that New Zealand’s streamlined visa processes, work-rights policies, and NZD 10,000 scholarships for high-achieving Indian students reflect the government’s commitment to attracting global talent. Indian student enrolments in New Zealand are expected to grow by 93.9% between 2025 and 2030, rising from 22,225 to 42,594.

Australia continues to be a leading destination for Indian students, offering world-class universities, industry-integrated education, and extended post-study work rights. Vik Singh, Trade and Investment Commissioner for South Asia at Austrade, highlighted Australia’s commitment to creating global partnerships and ensuring a smooth education-to-employment transition.

Both New Zealand and Australia are focusing on industry-aligned education in sectors like STEM, healthcare, and business to enhance employability. While the US, UK, and Canada remain dominant study destinations, Australia and New Zealand are gaining popularity, with India, China, Nepal, Vietnam, and Indonesia emerging as key source countries.

With the increase in international student enrolments, the demand for student accommodation is also rising, strengthening the reputation of Australia and New Zealand as leading education hubs. By 2025, Indian student enrolments in Australia are expected to surpass 101,552, while New Zealand will host 22,225 Indian students, further solidifying the region’s status as a preferred higher education destination.
