Rajya Sabha Chairman Calls Meeting Over Controversy Involving Judge, Stresses on NJAC Act

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar called a meeting of floor leaders to discuss the controversy surrounding Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court. The controversy follows the alleged discovery of unaccounted cash at his residence. Dhankhar had a meeting with Leader of the House JP Nadda and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge about the issue.

Dhankhar mentioned that it was a good time to bring up the National Judicial Appointments Committee (NJAC) Act, which was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2015. He stressed that the NJAC Act had received widespread support in Parliament and state legislatures.

The Chairman emphasized that the legal system created by the NJAC Act, which had been approved by both Parliament and state legislatures, should be respected as the rule of law. He said that if the NJAC Act had been implemented, things might have been different.

Dhankhar also urged members to reflect on the issue and make sure that no institution oversteps what was decided by Parliament and the states. He stated that the matter goes beyond just the judicial issue and concerns the sovereignty and relevance of Parliament.

While not wanting to make a judgment on the ongoing case, Dhankhar highlighted the importance of respecting the rule of law and upholding the decisions made by Parliament and the states.
