Rajya Sabha Chairman Holds Meeting on Judicial Accountability and NJAC Act

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday conducted a meeting with Leader of the House J.P. Nadda and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the issue of judicial accountability and the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act.

The closed-door meeting, which started at 11:30 am, was held at Dhankhar’s chamber. Earlier, the Chairman had written to both Nadda and Kharge to schedule the discussion, according to sources.

This meeting comes after Dhankhar’s observations on March 21 in response to allegations of corruption against a judge of the Delhi High Court. In his remarks, Dhankhar referred to the NJAC Act, which was passed by Parliament but later struck down by the Supreme Court. He emphasized the need for any changes to the Constitution to be approved by Parliament and at least 50% of state legislatures.

Dhankhar also recalled the unanimous support the NJAC Act received in Parliament and its endorsement by 16 state assemblies, stressing the importance of the legislative framework created for judicial accountability. He expressed concerns over recent incidents that had not been immediately addressed and highlighted the need for transparent, accountable, and effective systemic responses.

Additionally, Congress leader Renuka Choudhary submitted an adjournment notice in the Rajya Sabha today to discuss judicial accountability. The Supreme Court is currently conducting an inquiry into the alleged discovery of burnt wads of cash at the residence of Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Verma, who has denied any wrongdoing.
