Punjab and Haryana High Court Issues Notice on Habeas Corpus Petition for Farm Leader’s Release

In a late evening hearing, the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued a notice of motion to the State of Punjab and the Director-General of Police regarding a habeas corpus petition seeking the release of farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. The petition was filed by farmer leader Gurmukh Singh, who argued that Dallewal was being held in illegal custody.

The petitioner stated that Dallewal’s detention appeared to be an effort to suppress the farmers’ movement and instil fear among peaceful protesters, which violated their fundamental rights to freedom of speech, expression, assembly, and association under Article 19 of the Constitution. The petition also mentioned that around 300 to 400 other members of farmer organisations were also missing.

The case is scheduled for further hearing on Monday, with the High Court seeking a response from the Punjab state and the DGP on the matter.
