4 Devotees Dead, Several Missing as Pickup Truck Falls into Canal in Ludhiana

A tragic accident took place late at night in Ludhiana Punjab when a Mahindra pickup truck fell into the Jagera canal from a bridge on Malerkotla Road. The truck was carrying 26 people all devotees returning from Mata Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh.

Four people including two children died in the accident. They have been identified as Jarnail Singh (52), Manjit Kaur (58), Sukhman Kaur (1.5 years), and Akashdeep Singh (8). All of them were from Manakwal village. The accident happened around 9:45 p.m. when the overloaded vehicle lost balance while trying to pass another vehicle.

Some people are still missing, and rescue operations are ongoing. According to Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, 24 people were believed to be in the truck. So far 22 people have been rescued, and the search continues for the rest. The main cause of the accident is said to be overloading.

13 people were taken to Dehlon Civil Hospital. Dr. Rajesh Garg, the SMO, said four patients are admitted, four were sent home after treatment, and one person was referred to another hospital. None of the injured are in danger now.

Many of the injured are from Hussainpura, and include Sandeep Kumar, Sarabjit Kaur, Surinder Singh, Jaswinder Kaur, Swarnjit Kaur, Bhag Singh, Kaka Singh, Kamaljeet Kaur, and others.

Senior officials including MLA Malwinder Singh Gyaspura, SSP Jyoti Yadav, and DC Himanshu Jain visited the hospital to check on the injured and the rescue efforts. CM Bhagwant Mann is being updated regularly about the situation.

Sarpanch Kesar Singh from Manakwal village said the group left on July 26 to visit Naina Devi. Some of the injured have been referred to hospitals in Ahmedgarh Mandi, Khanna, and Ludhiana. So far only 16 to 17 people have been found. About 5 to 6 are still missing.

Rescue teams continue to search the canal for missing passengers.
