A 25-year-old legal case finally came to an end on Saturday during the National Lok Adalat held at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. It was one of many long-pending cases resolved through mutual settlement.
Out of 151 cases settled, 73 had been pending for over five years, 50 for more than ten years, 12 for over 20 years, and 15 between 20 and 24 years.
The total settlement amount in the Lok Adalat was ₹5.77 crore, with most of the resolved cases related to motor accident claims.
The Lok Adalat was held under the guidance of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sudhir Singh. Four benches were formed for the event, led by Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, Justice Kirti Singh, Justice Deepinder Singh Nalwa, and Justice Rohit Kapoor. A total of 458 cases had been listed for possible settlement.
Swati Sehgal, secretary of the High Court Legal Services Committee, said efforts are being made to identify more such cases for future Lok Adalats, offering people a quick and low-cost way to resolve disputes without going through long trials.
National Lok Adalats are part of a nationwide effort by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to reduce the load of pending cases by encouraging compromise and early resolution.
