New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday allowed podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia to continue airing The Ranveer Show, but with the condition that it must maintain “morality and decency” and be suitable for all age groups.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh noted that Allahbadia’s podcast is his primary source of income, supporting around 280 employees. The court also extended his interim protection from arrest but directed him to cooperate with the investigation in Guwahati.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre and states like Maharashtra, Assam, and Odisha, argued that the controversial remarks made on the India’s Got Latent YouTube show were not only vulgar but also perverse. He urged the court not to allow Allahbadia to release new content. “Let him remain silent for some time,” Mehta stated.
The court reminded Allahbadia’s lawyer, senior advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, that fundamental rights come with restrictions. Justice Surya Kant also warned against taking the court lightly, pointing out that one of the accused had fled to Canada and made public comments about the case.
The bench ordered that Allahbadia must not discuss the case on his show. Additionally, the Centre was instructed to draft a regulatory mechanism for social media content, inviting public feedback.
For now, the court has denied Allahbadia permission to travel abroad, stating that his request will be considered only after he joins the investigation.
Several FIRs were filed against Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps, over his comments about parents and sex on comedian Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent. On February 18, the Supreme Court had criticized his remarks as “vulgar” and “shameful,” while granting him interim protection from arrest.
