A new study published in The Lancet warns that by 2050, nearly one-third of India’s population could be obese. This growing health crisis is driven by several factors:
1. Unhealthy Diets – More people are eating processed and fast food, which is high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and calories.
2. Lack of Exercise – Sedentary lifestyles, especially in cities, mean people are not getting enough physical activity.
3. Stress & Sleep Issues – Increased stress and poor sleep habits contribute to weight gain.
4. Economic Growth & Urbanization– As incomes rise, many shift to high-calorie diets and more convenient lifestyles, reducing physical activity.
5. Genetic & Medical Factors– Some people are more prone to obesity due to genetics or medical conditions.
Experts warn that obesity can lead to serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
To prevent this crisis, India needs better awareness, healthier food choices, and more focus on fitness.
