India and Mauritius Announce Major Projects and Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritius counterpart, Navin Chandra Ramgoolam, announced on Wednesday that they have decided to elevate the India-Mauritius relationship to an “enhanced strategic partnership.” This decision follows a bilateral meeting held in Port Louis.

As part of the new partnership, the Indian government unveiled several initiatives, including new projects worth 500 million Mauritian rupees (approximately Rs 100 crore). One of the notable projects will be the construction of a new Parliament building in Mauritius, with India offering its support for the project.

Prime Minister Modi also shared that India will help train 500 Mauritian civil servants over the next five years, and both countries agreed to settle their mutual trade in local currencies. This move aims to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Modi emphasized the significance of the collaboration, calling the Parliament building project a gift from India to Mauritius, describing it as a gesture from the “mother of democracy.”
