IMD Predicts One of the Hottest March Months in India

Heatwave Threatens Crops and Breaks Temperature Records

India is expected to experience one of the warmest March months on record, according to officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Above-average temperatures will persist for most of the month, posing a significant threat to mature wheat crops, which could result in lower yields. Some areas in Goa and Coastal Maharashtra have already recorded heatwave conditions with temperatures above 37°C. Meanwhile, Gujarat and Karnataka are also experiencing hot and humid weather, with temperatures hovering between 35°C and 37°C.

Western Disturbance to Bring Rain in Northern India

A western disturbance is set to bring rainfall to northern India between February 27 and March 1. States like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana are expected to receive rain during this period. The IMD has also predicted a thunderstorm and rainfall in Delhi on Friday, leading to a slight drop of one degree Celsius in the minimum temperature.

IMD Official Predicts Extreme Heat in March

Before the IMD’s official forecast release, a senior meteorologist stated that March 2025 is expected to be unusually hot, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures remaining above normal. By mid-March, several states could see maximum temperatures exceeding 40°C. Mumbai is already under a heatwave warning for February 25 and 26, with its temperature reaching 38.7°C—5.9 degrees higher than the usual average. The rise in temperatures is linked to a rain-deficient winter, leading to extreme weather conditions across various regions.
