Foreign Woman’s Lord Jagannath Tattoo Sparks Controversy in Odisha; Two Arrested

A tattoo of Lord Jagannath on a foreign woman’s thigh has caused outrage in Odisha, leading to the arrest of a tattoo artist and his boss. The incident took place in Bhubaneswar, where devotees filed a complaint with the police, saying the tattoo was placed in an “inappropriate” location and hurt their religious sentiments.

The police arrested tattoo shop owner Rocky Ranjan Bisoi and artist Aswini Kumar Pradhan under Section 299 of the BNS, which punishes acts intended to insult religious beliefs.

The foreign woman, who works for an NGO, apologized in a video message. She said she did not intend to disrespect Lord Jagannath and promised to remove the tattoo once it heals. The tattoo shop owner also apologized, stating that they had advised the woman to place the tattoo on her arm instead, but she insisted on her thigh.

The controversy started after a photo of the tattoo went viral on social media, leading to protests by devotees. The woman has assured that she will either remove or cover up the tattoo soon.
