New Delhi: Taking note of two rounds of discussions between the Centre and farmers demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops, the Supreme Court on Friday deferred the hearing on the ongoing farmers’ protest.
A Bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh stated that the matter would be taken up after the third round of talks, scheduled for March 19.
The court is currently hearing petitions seeking contempt action against Punjab government officials over the provision of medical aid to farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh informed the Bench that two state ministers had participated in the discussions.
The Bench also acknowledged an interim report submitted by the court-appointed high-powered committee, which was formed in September 2024 to address farmers’ grievances. While appreciating the panel’s work, the court decided to keep the interim report with itself for now.
Earlier, on January 22, the Supreme Court had put on hold contempt action against Punjab’s Chief Secretary and DGP after being informed that Dallewal, who had been on a hunger strike since November 26, 2024, was receiving medical treatment without breaking his fast.
On January 2, the court had questioned the Centre on why it could not assure farmers that their concerns, including a legal MSP guarantee, would be considered.
