Kapurthala: Senior Congress leader and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh held an event called “Navi Soch, Nava Punjab” to encourage farmers to shift from cotton to maize.
He said that maize is the best alternative to cotton, which has been badly affected by pink bollworm pests in recent years.
To support farmers, he announced that he and his son, Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Rana Inder Partap Singh, would buy maize at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the next two years.
“My son has promised that if we fail to buy maize at MSP for the next two years, we will not contest the 2027 state elections,” said Rana Gurjeet.
He added that cotton was once the main crop in the region, but now many ginning and spinning mills are closing down. While he also suggested growing sugarcane, his ultimate goal is to bring back cotton farming.
Rana Gurjeet had previously criticized Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, calling him a “selfish leader,” but avoided making any such comments at this event.
