Chandigarh: The Punjab government has sharpened its focus on tackling drug abuse by formulating a comprehensive policy for prevention and rehabilitation. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, in a high-level meeting on Friday, directed all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to work together to curb the drug menace.
During the meeting, a multi-pronged strategy was devised to identify drug hotspots, disrupt supply chains, and take strict action against traffickers. Officials have been instructed to seize and destroy properties belonging to those involved in drug trafficking.
Emphasizing the need for a collective effort, CM Mann urged Deputy Commissioners to turn the anti-drug campaign into a mass movement. He is also expected to discuss the newly framed drug prevention and rehabilitation policy with district officers, directing them to ensure its effective implementation.
This meeting comes a day after the government announced a five-member Cabinet subcommittee to oversee drug-related initiatives. Headed by Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, the panel includes Ministers Aman Arora, Dr. Balbir Singh, Laljit Singh Bhullar, and Taranpreet Singh Sond. The committee will monitor the actions of the police and health departments to address the crisis.
The government’s renewed push against drugs follows significant public backlash, particularly from women, over its handling of the issue during last year’s Lok Sabha elections. Senior officials from the Jails, Sports, Employment & Skill Development, Health, and Home Affairs departments, along with top police officers led by the DGP, also participated in the meeting.
