Jio Platforms Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to India

Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, announced on Wednesday that it has signed a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s internet services to India. This partnership comes a day after Bharti Airtel made a similar announcement. However, the deal depends on SpaceX receiving approval from the Indian government to offer Starlink services in the country.

While Jio and SpaceX had previously disagreed on how satellite communication spectrum should be assigned—Jio favored an auction while SpaceX supported an administrative approach—the government has chosen the administrative route. SpaceX has applied for security clearance, and the application is currently under review by the Indian Home Ministry.

The agreement allows Jio and SpaceX to explore how Starlink’s services can enhance Jio’s offerings and complement SpaceX’s services for consumers and businesses. Jio will sell Starlink equipment at its retail outlets and through its online stores. Both companies aim to provide reliable internet access across India, especially in rural and remote areas.

Jio also plans to offer Starlink equipment along with its existing services, JioAirFiber and JioFiber, to extend high-speed internet to even the most challenging locations. Additionally, Jio and SpaceX are exploring other areas of cooperation to further improve India’s digital infrastructure.

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, said, “By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the accessibility of high-speed broadband across the country.” SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell expressed excitement about the collaboration, saying they look forward to receiving approval from the Indian government to expand Starlink’s services in India.
