Haryana: India is set to mark a significant milestone in its aviation industry with the establishment of the country’s first-ever private sector manufacturing facility for trainer aircraft. The facility, which will be located at Haryana’s Hisar aerodrome, is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. The project is a joint venture between Tamil Nadu-based Sakthi Group and Austria’s Diamond Aircraft Industries, both of which will collaborate to produce the popular DA40 NG trainer aircraft for flying schools across India.
The Sakthi Aircraft Industry, a joint venture formed by the Sakthi Group and Diamond Aircraft, recently signed an agreement with the Aero Club of India to supply 200 DA40 NG aircraft to flying training organizations (FTOs) across the country. The deal is being hailed as one of the largest trainer aircraft orders globally and will help cater to the growing demand in India, the world’s third-largest and fastest-growing aviation market.
Initially, 50 of the 200 aircraft will be imported as complete knocked-down (CKD) units from Diamond Aircraft’s manufacturing plants in Austria and Canada. These will be assembled in India. The remaining 150 planes will be produced locally at the upcoming final assembly line (FAL) in Hisar, Haryana. The FAL is expected to manufacture up to 100 aircraft annually, contributing to the country’s aviation sector by providing high-quality, locally assembled aircraft.
Sakthi Aircraft Industry aims to gradually increase the percentage of India-made components in the assembled DA40 NG aircraft to 60-70% within the next five years. The company plans to source materials from Indian manufacturers already supplying components to global giants like Airbus and Boeing.
The 200-plane order, which is expected to be completed by 2027, marks a key moment in India’s ambition to bolster its aviation manufacturing capabilities while meeting the growing demand for training aircraft in the region.
