Efecan Kultur, a 24-year-old TikTok star from Turkey, has tragically passed away due to obesity-related health complications. Kultur was renowned for his ‘mukbang’ videos, a trend originating from South Korea where hosts consume large quantities of food while interacting with their audience. His content amassed a significant following, with over 155,000 followers on TikTok.
In December 2024, Kultur’s health began to deteriorate, leading to hospitalization. He faced severe mobility issues, including an inability to stand, and required assistance for basic activities. Despite ongoing medical treatment, he passed away on March 7, 2025.
The Turkish government has expressed concern over the potential dangers of the ‘mukbang’ trend, especially among younger audiences. In response, authorities are considering legislation to restrict social media usage for individuals under 16 years old, aiming to mitigate health risks associated with such content.
Kultur’s untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the potential health risks associated with extreme eating behaviors showcased in online content. It underscores the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles and critical awareness among viewers, particularly the youth, regarding the content they consume and emulate online.
