In Punjab’s flood-affected districts, rescue efforts have been in progress since the morning.

Seven districts in Punjab are impacted by flooding as a result of the constant rain and water released from dams. Three persons are dead, and four are missing due to the powerful river current. Areas like Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Firozpur, and Fazilka are the most severely impacted. Here, the floods have impacted over 150 settlements. The water is 5 to 7 feet deep in numerous places. In Firozpur, more than two thousand individuals have been saved and relocated to relief camps. Relief and rescue efforts are carried out by the army, police, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), and other organizations. Rescue efforts are underway on the ground and in the air in regions hit by flooding.

To stop child begging in Pathankot the District Child Protection Department has started a special campaign under the orders of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

On Fridayseveral raids were carried out in different parts of the city led by the Deputy Commissioner.

During one of the raids near Shani Dev Temple a young girl was found begging. Officials talked to her parents and gave them instructions. The child was later released but the authorities warned that strict action would be taken against any parent who allows their child to beg.

District Child Protection Officer Renu Kumari said this campaign is part of the CM’s Jeevan Jyoti campaign and will continue till July 31 2025. The focus is on stopping children from begging outside temples and on roads.

She added that children found begging will be enrolled in schools to receive an education. If the parents fail to provide proper documents for the child then child will be shifted to a government shelter home and further legal steps will be taken.

Security has been increased in Madhopur, near the Punjab-Jammu and Kashmir border, after the terror attack in Pahalgam. Punjab Police and central security agencies have been deployed in the area.

In Pathankot, police have set up several checkpoints along the Pathankot-Jammu national highway. Vehicles are being thoroughly checked. Senior police officials reached Madhopur and made detailed plans to prevent any untoward incident.

Police believe that the suspects involved in the attack may have entered the city or nearby areas. To deal with the situation, the Army, BSF, Punjab Police’s anti-sabotage teams, and Special Operations Group (SOG) have been deployed.

The SOG is a special police unit trained to handle terrorism and high-risk situations. SSP Daljinder Singh Dhillon said heavy security was necessary at this time.

Joint quick response teams (QRTs) from the Army and Punjab Police are patrolling the border. Around 340 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed in the district — 100 of them at the interstate border. Dog squads are also being used for security checks.

Special attention is being given to railway stations and bus stands. Pathankot is seen as a sensitive area because it is the gateway to both Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Most road traffic to these states passes through the city.

In 2016, Pathankot was the site of a major terrorist attack when four terrorists from Lashkar-e-Toiba entered the Air Force base. All were killed by NSG commandos flown in from Delhi.
